What is amebiasis? Amebiasis is an infection caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. This single-celled organism is responsible for causing amebic dysentery, an intestinal illness that can lead to a range of symptoms, from mild to severe. Amebiasis is more common in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene practices. Amebiasis The infection is typically transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated food or water containing the cysts of the parasite. Once ingested, the cysts can release trophozoites (the active form of the parasite) in the colon, leading to infection.
